The pet is a great companion, helps motivates you to walk and to play”, said Ana Maria Perez, an ecologist and educator for 35 years.
Although both men and women prefer dogs as pets; they have a greater empathy with cats, while they are more open to having other animals such as fish, rabbits and turtles.
This is shown by a study conducted by the company Raddar in five cities in Colombia, Barranquilla, Bogota, Bucaramanga, Cali and Cartagena, where he consulted 1,200 people.
According to this study, one in four people have a dog or cat at home. For men, 74 percent preferred a dog as a pet and 24 percent preferred a cat. Simarily, 79 % of women chose a dog, with 15 percent for a cat and 3 percent for a fish.
For Claudia Serna, the Raddar researcher, “this represents an interesting market potential for products.”
Affective Pet Bond
When taking responsibility to care for another living thing, one must have the economic capacity to provide all the pet care required. The main point being that people should have this in mind when thinking about having a pet. Such thought would help prevent subsequent pet abandonment due to economic factors.
“A dog is to be loved, just like anyone else in your immediate family. The pet is a great companion, helps motivates you to walk and to play”, said Ana Maria Perez, an ecologist and educator for 35 years.
That is, most people who have an animal in their care are willing to spend on it, not only for food but also for pet health and entertainment.
In fact, according to another study, the national average household expenditure on pets has advanced. According to Diana Baron and Andrew Tocorral in his master’s thesis in Marketing Management from Cesa, Colombians in 2012. Pet owners spent 563 7 million on pet food alone, while in 2007 the figure was 384.5 million. Pet care expenditure was 632.4 million dollars in 2012.
The Raddar research suggested that there is a strong tendency to have a pet when one becomes an adult, especially if in childhood if the parens had a pet at home. According to the study, 84 percent of those with a pet, indicate that their pet parents had a pet as a child. Moreover, 96 percent are willing to let their children have a pet. This shows a strong emotional human bond with animals.
This is the case of Ana Maria, ” as little ones we had dogs in my house and I remember we played and had fun with them. Now that I am married and I have my daughter, Mariana, 10 months old, I want her to have that experience also. I have read that having a dog encourages babies development and teaches them to interact better with other people, which they learn from the dog. “
Regarding ages, people who have pets are divided into two main groups, according to the study: 12 to 25 years and over 46.
The research suggests that this may be because the former have more time to dedicate to the animal and “do not usually have significant economic burdens,” and the latter “have some desire for the care and custody of a pet, have more available time, have the economic means and enjoy the emotional stability gained from the pet.
